Martha Stewart's Mom’s Hot Cross Buns

Ingredients

1 cup milk - lukewarm

2 env dry yeast

½ cup sugar

2 tsp salt

12 Tbls melted butter

¾ tsp cinnamon

¾ tsp nutmeg

5 ½ cups flour

4 eggs - beaten

1 cup currants or candied fruit

Directions

Put milk and yeast in mixer bowl then add rest of ingredients. Mix together. Turn out on floured board and knead a bit. Place in oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise 1 ½ hours till double. Turn out on floured board and form into 24 rolls and put on oiled baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise till doubled. Cut a cross on top of each roll. Before baking brush with a mixture of egg white, water & salt (makes them shiny). 

Bake in 350-375 oven 25 minutes.

Glaze with powdered sugar and milk mixture flavored with lemon juice.
